blair

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Blair McKinnon in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 11, 2010. Blair was fortunate to have overcome a brain tumor at the young age of eight but had to cope with the occasional seizure, which ultimately took him from us so suddenly. Despite his battle Blair always remained a kind, caring, and gentle soul that simply dealt with whatever issues put in front of him without complaint and the with utmost diligence. He was a smart, articulate, giving and genuine person that cared deeply about his family, his friends and his community.

Most recently Blair discovered a real passion in a new Nanaimo organization, the Young Professionals of Nanaimo, that he helped found. Under Blair's guidance and mentorship, several different fundraising initiatives took shape, the largest being the Nanaimo Train Station restoration effort. Blair was absolutely integral to the Wild West Express event held on March 27th. Those who were on the train will remember him for his professionalism and never-ending smile. He was and will continue to be a huge motivator in building this all important historical train station.

Blair's involvement in community building and fundraising began early with his desire to give back to Children's Hospital and in his short lifetime, he touched more community organizations and events than one could count. He was wise, worldly, and possessed maturity and experience well beyond his young age. Blair was always the guy behind the scenes that kept a cool level head and simply got the job done. Blair was known for his down to earth, laidback, easy going manner. He approached everyday with a positive attitude towards life and it showed. His passions included golfing, hockey, travel, and especially playing poker with his buddies over a couple of cool refreshments. He was loved by all and lived each day knowing it could be his last.

Blair is survived by his parents Roger and Nancy McKinnon, his sister Michelle, his grandmother Yvonne McKinnon, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and more friends than you can imagine. A celebration of life will be held at 1:00P.M., Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Cottonwood Golf Course, 1975 Haslam Road. In lieu of flowers his family has asked that donations be made in memory of Blair to help restore Nanaimo's historic train station. A permanent recognition will be placed for Blair in the new station, once his dream is realized.
